AIN'T NO SUNSHINE - Bill Withers
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tabbed by: John L.

Tuning: Standard (EADGBe)

Great song. This is the way Bill plays it live.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone..."

e|---------------------------------|
B|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
G|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
D|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
A|---------------------------------|
E|--5-----5-----0-----3-----5------|

"It's not warm when she's away..."

e|---------------------------------|
B|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
G|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
D|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
A|---------------------------------|
E|--5-----5-----0-----3-----5------|

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, and she's always gone too long..."

e|---------------------------------------------------|
B|-----8-----8-----8-----8-----6-----6-----6-----6---|
G|-----7-----7-----7-----7-----5-----5-----5-----5---|
D|---------------------------------------------------|
A|--7-----7-----7-----7-----5-----5-----5-----5------|
E|---------------------------------------------------|

"Anytime she goes away..."

e|---------------------------------|
B|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
G|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
D|-----5-----5-----0-----0-----5---|
A|---------------------------------|
E|--5-----5-----0-----3-----5------|

Repeat that structure for the rest of the song.

Tap the body of your guitar during the "And I know, I know..." part.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The simple chords:

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone..."

Am7 (2 counts) Em7 (1 count) G (1 count) Am7 (4 counts)

"It's not warm when she's away..."

Am7 (2 counts) Em7 (1 count) G (1 count) Am7 (4 counts)

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone, and she's always gone too long..."

Em7 (4 counts) Dm7 (4 counts)

"Anytime she goes away..."

Am7 (2 counts) Em7 (1 count) G (1 count) Am7 (4 counts)

That's it.

I think this is the best one. Question: what do you play for the "I know I know" part - and right after?

Thanks!

In the live performances I've seen, Bill Withers doesn't play during the sections you mentioned -- it's just drums, vocals, and tapping the body of the guitar.

If you want to play something during that section, it sounds like the harmony would be a tonic pedal. An Am or Am7 would work.
