you've probably figured this out by now, but maybe somebody else wants to know. it's actually easier to not barre the F chord in this case.
when you go from C to fmaj7, keep your index and ring fingers in the same spots, and just move your middle finger from the 4th string to the 3rd string, and put your pinky on the 4th string. this is called a cheater's F, and comes in handy sometimes (like in this song). then you can take your middle finger off to change from fmaj7 to fmaj9!
