                4 + 20 - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: maguri
Tuning: Standard

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
4 + 20 (1970)
(Stephen Stills)

From: "Deja Vu"

Stephen Stills' beautiful solo effort. There are different ways of playing
this song. The first one uses an Open D-Tuning, the second one a simple
Drop D-Tuning. I tabbed both of them out below.

1. Open D-tuning (D-A-D-D-A-D)
(Capo 1st fret for playing along to the original version on "Deja Vu")
Demo recording: http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/maguri/music/play966319

Stills tunes down his guitar; several recordings exist - E, Eb and D. By
using an open D-tuning (D-A-D-D-A-D) and a capo, one can adjust to different
versions. This tuning helps to create the drone underlying the song and the
sound of the tuned down strings adds to the general melancholy and bluesy
feel.

2. Drop-D-tuning (D-A-D-G-B-E)
(capo 1st fret for playing along to the original version on "Deja Vu")
Demo recording: http://profile.ultimate-guitar.com/maguri/music/play966320

If you don't want to take the trouble of retuning so many strings, you
can use a simple Drop-D-tuning (D-A-D-G-B-E) and a capo to play in Eb or E.
You lose some of the effects of the original and get an overall cleaner,
"folkier" sound. Some of the voicings may be harder to play, too. They're
still not really difficult, though.

The basic chord in the Intros and Verses is a D played using a small barre
on the second fret over the strings G-B-e. Leave this chord on throughout
the intro and verses, lifting your index finger only when you have to play
the open e-string in the second bar. This way your ring finger and the pinky
are free to play the additional notes on the e- and G-string.

LYRICS

Four and twenty years ago
I come into this life,
Son of a woman
And a man who lived in strife
He was tired of being poor
But he wasn't into selling door to door
And he worked like a devil to be more

A different kind of poverty now upsets me so
Night after sleepless night
I walk the floor and want to know
Why am I so alone?
Where is my woman, can I bring her home?
Have I driven her away?
Is she gone?

Morning comes the sunrise,
And I'm driven to my bed
I see that it is empty
And there's devils in my head
I embrace the many colored beast
I grow weary of the torment
Can there be no peace?
And I find myself just wishing
That my life would simply cease
