1) I think that the riff is an open/12th fret pull off riff in dropped-D tuning down 1/2 step, since that's been their standard tuning since Withering To Death.

2) There's definitely more to this song than power chords. While I may get on the band's case for their recent albums being pretty sucky, guitar-wise, they still add a lot more to their riffs than just power chords.

I hope this helps. If not, I'll just work on my own version once I get my 6-string fixed (I don't touch the tuning on my 7-string).
