You have the right idea down, but the progression consists of different variations of these chords.
Dsus4 Cadd9 G Em7
are the chords you really want to use, Dsus4 is very similar to a D as is Cadd9 with a C. I suggest any new players try these chord substitutions because they're great chords and really create a different sound when played (especially as open chords).
