This is a great song by Kate Wolf, "Here in California" from the album Close to You
Key: Ab, capo on 1st fret
[Verse 1]
G Am G
When I was young my mamma told me
D Em
She said child take your time
C G
Don't fall in love too quickly
Am C
Before you know your mind
G Am G
She held me round the shoulders
D Em
In a voice so soft and kind
C G
She said love can make you happy
Am G
And love can rob you blind
[Chorus]
Am D G
Here in California
Am D7 Em
fruit hangs heavy on the vine
C G
And there's no gold, I thought I'd warn ya
Am D G
And the hills turn brown in the summertime
[Verse 2]
G Am G
Well, I may learn to love you
D Em
But I can't say when
C G
This morning we were strangers
Am C
And tonight we're only friends
G Am G
I'll take my time to know you
D Em
I'll take my time to see
C G
There's nothing I won't show you
Am G
If you take your time with me
[Chorus]
Am D G
Here in California
Am D7 Em
fruit hangs heavy on the vine
C G
And there's no gold, I thought I'd warn ya
Am D G
And the hills turn brown in the summertime
(Instrumental)
[Verse 3]
G Am G
There's an old familiar story
D Em
An old familiar rhyme
C G
To everything there is a season
Am C
To every purpose there's a time
G Am G
A time to love and come together
D Em
A time when love longs for a name
C G
A time for questions we can't answer
Am G
Though we ask them just the same
[Chorus]
Am D G
Here in California
Am D7 Em
fruit hangs heavy on the vine
C G
And there's no gold, I thought I'd warn ya
Am D G
And the hills turn brown in the summertime

Lovely work here, and Capo 2 for Lucinda's version on the tribute album.

Caroline Herring plays a great cover of this song, but the first line of the chorus she plays "C B/G Am G" and that works pretty well too (it's how I play it)

Does anyone have a simple strumming pattern for this? I know the original had a lot of picking.
