I would call that chord you're talking about, (A on the second and third strings, with no finger on the fourth string), a "D Maj7add2". If you make a regular open D on the first, second and third strings and slide your finger back on the B string to the second fret it becomes a D Maj7 chord. Looks like your A chord, just on strings one, two and three, instead of two, three and four. Now if you lift your finger off the E string, then you've added the second or ninth, but in this position, I would call it the second. If anyone else sees this and knows something I don't or that I'm missing then please feel free, set me straight.

Tom, I'm not sure but I think the answer to the author's question is a lot easier than that. I believe he is asking about lifting his finger off of the G string. That would mean that the chord he is asking about is an A7 chord. Is that right author?
