Sorry for any confusion, but use STANDARD tuning, it is not supposed to be in Drop D. There is another tab claiming this song is in Drop D, but I do not agree with it since Michelle Branch songs always use standard tuning.

So far it sounds pretty good. I have a question though, when the tab says:

4 x 2 4

How do I avoid playing that second string while strumming?

i'd assume you're using your ring finger to play the top string in the intro thingy, so just use that to drape over the second string, muting it. if you push the string down, it's obviously gonna play, so just have your finger lightly touch the A string.
