Music has these things called measures that help with keeping the beat, which is sort of important for a bass. You can even use them with tabs too! At least show what's a long count vs. a short count (you can make your lines the same length to show the same number of counts).
-5-5- is sometimes a 1/4 note, and sometimes it's a tiny transition note, it isn't too helpful, it's just lazy. (maybe I'm wrong thinking music should use music conventions?)
