Play the Bass of the Chord with your (right) thumb and then UP DOWN UP with your thumb on UP and other fingers on DOWN :

With the D chord : alternate D string (4th) and A string (5th)
With the A chord : A string (5th)
With the G chord : G note on the E string (6th)
With the Bm chord : B note on the A string (5th)
With the E chord : E string (6th)

This is all wrong! Its not A D A D in the beginning, its just A, but he play the bass in A and D. So just play a D chord and the bass on the E and the D string. So its; A(string) D(chord) D(string) D(chord), and thats the pattern.
