Is there any reason for the weird tuning? As far as I can tell this is playable simply in Drop D.

Or standard on a five. Ultimately, it's the same for a number of songs. Playing 1.5 steps down is playing it the way it was recorded, I suppose.
Plus, certain notes just sound better when played on a detuned string. A D5 chord on a guitar that is just drop D sounds a lot less ballsy than the same chord fretted on a drop C guitar.
