Strange Fruit
(words & music Abel Meeropol)

Standard tuning: EADGBE
(Piano arranged for guitar)

Bm A G
  Southern trees
  Bearing strange fruit
Bm A G
  Blood on the leaves
  And blood at the root

Em Bm A
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
  G F# Bm A G F#
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Em Bm A G F#
Pastoral scene of the gallant south
Em E
And the bulging eyes and the twisted mouth

Bm A G F#
The scent of magnolia sweet and fresh
Em Bm A G F# Bm A G F#
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Bm A G F#
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
  For the rain to gather
  For the wind to suck
  For the sun to rot
Em Bm A G F#
  For the trees to drop
Bm A G F# Bm
Here is a strange and bitter crop

I dont believe this to be excellent, I cant in any fashion make that E chord work. I think the chord progression is much more straightforward than this, maybe the transition fro piano was a strange one, The first Bm A G F# is good, as is Em Bm A G F# Gm A G F#, but I believe after that it simple repeats for verse and chorus 2, and then the 4 Em's in a row should be (in the positions and order they already are) Em F# F#

I transposed this piece to A#m and was able to play exactly in the same key as sung by Billie Holiday (The Decca Masters). Thank you very much for your work.
