                             Buffalo - Alt-J
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: W.M.H.
E-mail:

Guitar 1 (Joe) is in open D tuning (DADF#AD)
Guitar 2 (Gwil) is in Standard tuning

This is the way the band plays the song. It’s based on several live versions, but
I’ll reference the studio
version to make it easier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOeKt2pSOTc

I’m fairly certain of Joe’s part, but I’m less sure of Gwil’s. Listen to the
song for timing. This is my
first tab, so let me know if you have any corrections.

After this part, Guitar 2 cuts out for “...for the future tributes of Thom Sonny Green...”
while Guitar 1 plays this:

A |----3-----3-----7-----7---|
F#|-----3-----3-----7-----7--|

D |--3-----3-----7-----7-----| X1

NOTE: This last riff appears to absent from the studio version, but this is how he plays
it live.

1st INSTRUMENTAL 1:08-1:27

I recommend playing Guitar 1’s part with your ring finger fretting the G (or in this
case F#) string while
using your middle and index fingers to fret the notes on the low E (D) string.

Guitar 1
D |----0-------0------0------0-----0-----0-----0-----0----|

2nd VERSE 1:28-1:56

This verse is the same as the first one, except the first bit is sung acapella, so
Guitar 1 doesn’t come in
until the second time. If you like, you can play just the bass string the first time and
then add in the
rest the second time like this:

Guitar 1
D |-------------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------|
F#|-------------------------------------------------------------|
D |-------------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------|
D |--7-----------------------5-----------------------3----------|

-------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------|
-2-----------0-----------------------| X1

D |---0-----0-----0-----0-----5-----5-----5-----5-----3-----3---|
A |----0-----0-----0-----0-----5-----5-----5-----5-----3-----3--|
F#|-----6-----6-----6-----6-----5-----5-----5-----5-----3-----3-|
D |-------------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------|
D |--7-----7-----7-----7-----5-----5-----5-----5-----3-----3----|

--2-----2-----0-----0-----0-----0----|
---2-----2-----0-----0-----0-----0---|
----2-----2-----0-----0-----0-----0--|
-------------------------------------|
-------------------------------------|
-2-----2-----0-----0-----0-----0-----| X1

Everything else is the same as the first verse.

2nd INSTRUMENTAL/”BUFFALO” PART 1:56-2:22

Guitar 1 is the same as the first Instrumental part.

Guitar 2
E |----------------------------------------------------------------|
B |----------------------------------------------------------------|
G |---11----11----11--12----12----12--14----14----14--14----14-----|
D |-----11----11--------11----11--------12----12--------12----12---|
A |---------------------------------14----14----14--14----14----14-|
E |-10----10----10--10----10----10---------------------------------| X2

When the “Buffalo” part comes in, Guitar 2 switches to playing this:

Guitar 2
E |------------------------------------------------------------|
B |------------------------------------------------------------|
G |-9/11-11--11\9-9/11-11--11\9-9/11-11--11\9-9/11-11-14-14-11-|
D |------------------------------------------------------------|
A |------------------------------------------------------------|
E |------------------------------------------------------------| X2

BRIDGE 2:23-2:31

Only Guitar 1 plays here.

D |---5-----5----|
A |----7-----7---|
F#|-----7-----7--|
D |--------------|
A |--------------|
D |--7-----7-----| X4

D |---5-----5----|
A |----7-----5---|
F#|-----5-----5--|
D |--------------|
A |--------------|
D |--5-----5-----| X1

OUTRO 2:32-END

Same as the instrumental, but on Guitar 1 you also fret the high E (D) string with your pinky.

Guitar 1
D |---12------12-----12------7-----5-----5-----5-----5----|
A |-----0-------0------0------0-----0-----0-----0-----0---|
F#|------12------12-----12-----7-----5-----5-----5-----5--|
D |-------------------------------------------------------|
A |-------------------------------------------------------|
D |--12------11------9------7-----5-----4-----2-----0-----| X4

Guitar 2
E |----------------------------------------------------------------|
B |----------------------------------------------------------------|
G |---11----11----11--12----12----12--14----14----14--14----14-----|
D |-----11----11--------11----11--------12----12--------12----12---|
A |---------------------------------14----14----14--14----14----14-|

D |------------------------------------------------------------|
A |------------------------------------------------------------|
E |------------------------------------------------------------| X2

Guitar 2 cuts out here, and Guitar 1 plays:

Guitar 1
D |-------------------------------------------------------------------0--|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------------0--|
F#|-------------------------------------------------------------------0--|
D |-------------------------------------------------------------------0--|
A |-------------------------------------------------------------------0--|
