This Is The Life - Amy Macdonald

TABBED BY: NintEndO

This is the tab of Amy's 2007 debut album. I've tabbed the acoustic guitar parts
played by Amy and I've included in each song the basic strumming pattern. I would
recommend that you listen to the song before trying the pattern. Also I've left a
Chord Summary below for those who don't want to have to scroll through the whole
tab. Enjoy playing as its a great album to strum along to.

[Intro]

D G Bm G

[Verse 1]

D
So called Mr Rock And Roll is dancing on his own again
Talking on his phone again to someone who tells him
          G D*
That his balance is low, he's got no where to go, he's on his own again

D
Rock chick of the century is acting like she used to be
Dancing like there's no one there before she never seemed to care
      G D*
Now she wouldn't dare, it's so rock and roll to be alone

[Chorus]

A Em
And they'll meet one day far away and say, I wish I was something more
A Em
And they'll meet one day far away and say, I wish I knew you
A D*
I wish I knew you before

[Verse 2]

D
Mrs Black and White she's never seen a shade of grey
Always something on her mind every single day
               G D*
But now she's lost her way and where does she go from here

D
Mr Multicultural sees all that one can see
He's living proof of someone very different to me
             G D*
But now he wants to be free free so he can see

[Chorus]

A Em
And they'll meet one day far away and say, I wish I was something more
A Em
And they'll meet one day far away and say, I wish I knew you
A D*
I wish I knew you before

[Verse 3]

          Em A G D
He'll say, I wish I knew you, I wish I met you when time was still on my side
          Em A G A A7
She'll say, I wish I knew you, I wish I loved you before I was his bride

D
And so they must depart too many more are broken hearts
But I've seen that all before in TV, books and film and more
               G D*
And there's a happy ending every single day

[Chorus]

A Em
And they'll meet one day far away and say, I wish I was something more

A D* D

2. This Is the Life

Note: Amy normally plays the 4 chords this way without a capo

C#m: x46654
A: x02220
E: 022100
G#m: 466444

but using a capo is so much easier.

A good arrangement with two guitars would be with one playing the non-capo version
and the other playing the capo version and the riff whenever it comes up

Riffs:

[Post-Chorus]

Oh the wind whistles down the cold dark street tonight
         C Em
And the people they were dancing to the music vibe
        Am

         C Em
And the songs they get louder each one better than before

[Chorus]

And you're singing the songs thinking this is the life
                        F
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
                    C Em

And you're singing the songs thinking this is the life

[Verse 2]

Am F C Em
So you’re heading down the road in your taxi for four
And you’re waiting outside Jimmy’s front door
But nobody’s in and nobody’s home till four
So you’re sitting there with nothing to do
Talking about Robert Ragger and his motley crew
And where you gonna go, and where you gonna sleep tonight?

[Chorus]

And you're singing the songs thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Oh where you gonna go, where you gonna go, where you gonna sleep tonight?
And you're singing the songs thinking this is the life
And you wake up in the morning and your head feels twice the size
Where you gonna go, where you gonna go, where you gonna sleep tonight?
Where you gonna sleep tonight

[Post-chorus riff]

[Bridge riff]

Where you gonna sleep tonight?

A poetic genius it's something I don't see
F E
Why would a genius be tripping on me?

And he's looking at me now but what he can't see
            F E
Is that I'm looking through his eyes so many lies behind his eyes
             Am C
And tell me stories from your past and sing me songs you wrote before

Some kind of poison prince your life is like a maze
         Am C

     F E
Is an upbeat song so we can dance the night away

[Instrumental]

Am C F E

[Verse 2]

Oh who said life was easy, who said life was fair?
Who said nobody gived a damn and nobody even care?
The way you're acting now like you left that all behind
You've given up, you've given in, another sucker of that slime

[Chorus] (x2)

Some kind of poison prince with your eyes in a daze
Some kind of poison prince your life is like a maze
And what we all want and what we all crave

But it's just your one sided feelings they keep getting in my way
And you don't know a single thing about the youth of today
Stating your opinion making it ring in my head all day

[Pre-Chorus]

And you say, my children weren't the same
My children's children they're the ones to blame
And you say, in my day we were better behaved
But it's not your day no more

        G C G
Oh the leaves are falling from the trees
         G C G
And the snow is coming don't you know
          C G
But I'll still remember which way to go
            D G
I'm on the road, the road to home

[Verse 2]

        G C G
Oh the sound is fading in my ears
        G C G
And I can't believe I've lasted all these years
          C G
But I'll still remember which way to go
            D G
I'm on the road, the road to home

[Verse 3]

        G C G
Oh the light is fading all the time
          G C G
And this life I'm in, it seems to pass me by
         C G
But I'll still remember which way to go
            D G
I'm on the road, the road to home

[Outro]

    G C G
Now I must say goodbye
              G C G
Keep telling myself now don't you cry

But I'm here where I belong
       D G
I'll see you soon, it won't be long
       D G
I'll see you soon, it won't be long

It won't be long

[Intro]

D Dsus4 D Dsus4

[Verse 1]

D A D G
I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me
       D A D G
In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away
            D A
So I've been telling old stories and singing songs
       D G
That make me think about where I came from
   D A D G
And that's the reason why I feel so far away today

[Verse 2]

     D A D G
And let me tell you that I love you, that I think about you all the time
G D A D
Caledonia's been calling me and now I'm going home
    D A D G
And if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad
G A D Dsus4
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
G A D
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

I'm very much the frustrated accoustic guitarist. Being persevering though. The tabs you've produced have at least earned me some kudos with ma kids!!!
jcdv maybe needs to cut you some slack and realise that we're all at different levels of ability. If absolute accuracy was required we should be asking amy herself to tab the songs.
Your interpretation at least lets us lesser mortals play along.
