...ONE STEP AHEAD... by Aretha Franklin
--------------------...................

*Released 1965*

*CAPO 1st FRET*

(Original Key: Eb)

Intro:

Dmaj7 Em7, G, Dmaj7, A

Verse 1:

         Dmaj7 Em7 G
I'm only one step ahead of heart-break,
Dmaj7 F#m B7
 One step ahead of mise-ry.
Em F#m Bm
One step is all I have to take, backwards,
          Em A (n.C)
To be the same old fool for you, I used to be.

Verse 2:

         Dmaj7 Em7 G
I'm only one step ahead of your arms,
Dmaj7 F#m B7
One kiss away from your sweet lips.
Em F#m Bm
I know I can't af-ford to stop, for one moment,
                     Em A, A7
'Cos I'm just out of reach of your fingertips.

Bridge 1:

D Bm D Bm
Your warm breath on my shoulder, keeps reminding me.
          Em C# F#m C#
That it's too soon to forget you, it's too late to be free,
          Em A
Can't you see?

Verse 3:

         Dmaj7 Em7 G
I'm only one step ahead of your love,
Dmaj7 F#m B7
I try and yet I can't take two.
Em F#m Bm
Seems like I'll have to take that one step backwards...

Coda:

     Em7 A Dmaj7 Bm
'Cos one step ahead is a step too far away from you.
Em7 A Dmaj7 Bm
One step ahead is a step too far away from you.

(Repeat to Fade)

Good catch.

Dmaj7 should be: xx0222.
I play it like an A chord, but a string down.
You can also have a mini-bar on the bottom 3 strings on the 2nd fret as well.
