If the Brakeman Turns My Way - Bright Eyes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tabbed by: Yoshima
Email: derby@fsmail.net

Tuning: Standard
Capo: 4th

>>> This song is played on a piano which is more flexible in the chord
building department than a guitar is. Therefore to get the best harmony
to go under the melody different inversions of the chord are needed.
These are explained below. Also try and strum more to the lower notes,
seems to work better.

Chords used relative to capo on 4th....

.....G......C.....D/F#....Em.....D.....Am....
e|-------------------------------2------0---|
B|---3------1------3------0------3------1---|
G|---0------0------2------0------2------2---|
D|---0------2------0------2------0------2---|
A|---2------3------0------2------0------0---|
E|---3------0------2------0-------------0---|

NOTE: Inversions...

>>>The D/F# and D chords contain the same notes, the D/F# chord has a 3rd
on the low E string as oppose to the D chord which has a 3rd on the high E.
So basically the D/F# chord is an inversion of the D chord and so the two
are switchable.

>>>An inversion of the C chord can also sound better at some points.
Instead of leaving the low E string open hold the 3rd fret. (332010)
Its up to you if you use this inversion or not.

>>>Verse

.....G..............................C.................G...
When panic grips your body and your heart is a hummingbird

G.............................................C.............D/F#..
Raven thoughts blacken your mind until you're breathing in reverse

....C....................Em.............G........D/F#....C........
And all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse

Em.......C.............Em.............C....
Every reassurance just magnifies the doubt

.......G.......D/F#....Em.......D/F#....G..
Better find yourself a place to level out

.....Em..D/F#.....

>>>

......G...............................C...............G..
Got a cricket for a conscience always looks the other way

..G...................................C.......D/F#.
A cocaine soul starts seeming like an empty cabaret

.....C..................Em....................G.....D/F#....C...
Hey, where have all the dancers gone? Now the music doesn't play

.........Em............C.............Em..................C....
Tried to listen to the river but you couldn't shut your mouth

.......G......D/F#...Em......D/F#....G
Better take a little time to level out

C....................G......
..I never thought of running

C......................D....
..My feet just led the way

.........G........................C.............G....
All this automatic writing I have tried to understand

.......G.........................C.............D/F#..
From a psychedelic angel who was tugging on my hand

........C..........Em...............G.......D/F#...C...
It's an infinite coincidence but it doesn't form a plan

.......Em.............C..............Em...........C....
So I'm headed for New England or the Paris of the South

Gonna find myself somewhere to level out

...Em...D/F#...

Are your brothels full, Oh Babylon, with merry Middlemen?

Never peer out of their periscopes from those deep opium dens

All this death must need a counterweight always someone born again

First a mother bathes her child then the other way around

...........G......D/F#...Em.....D/F#....G..
The Scales always find a way to level out

.........Am.....................D/F#....
It is an old world it's hard to remember

Like a dime store mystery

I'm a repeat first time offender

Who has rewritten history

If the Brakeman turns my way

When the Brakeman turns my way

great work. with a little improvisation this song sounds great solo. besides, who the hell needs accompanying vocals? nicely done.
