Don't Come Back Knockin' - Buddy Holly
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: maguri
Tuning: Standard

Buddy Holly
Don't Come Back Knockin' (1955)
(Buddy Holly/Sue Parrish)

Early version of the song, recorded in Wichita Falls, TX, December 7, 1955
Now on: "Down the Line - Rarities [CD 1]"

This is what I could figure out. The chords are of course not always plain
major chords, sometimes you have to add the 7 or 6. The solos are not
exactly what Holly plays but it's at least close. I can't really make up my
mind whether the guitar on the recording is finger-picked or not. In this
case some notes add themselves naturally to the main line I tabbed below.

Even though there are some imperfections here and there, I'm especially
dissatisfied with bar 10 of SOLO 1. I hear two notes played simultaneously
there but I can't figure out how to play them. Must be some special
Rockabilly voicing that I just don't know. Do you? Comments and corrections
are highly welcome!

The solo might be hybrid picked. It also seems unusual for him to be playing in F... maybe he capoed on 1 and played in E?

You're right, maybe it is capoed. Looking back, I do not really know why I chose this version to tab (probably because of the interesting solo here). Don't know much about the recording either - the CD booklet says it was recorded in Wichita Falls, December 7, 1955 with Buddy Holly (voc, g), Sonny Curtis (g), Don Guess (b) and Jerry Allison (dr).

The better-known version is certainly the one recorded two months later in Nashville, which ended up on the Decca LP "That'll be the Day" featuring Holly (voc only), Grady Martin (rhythm g), Sonny Curtis (lead g), Don Guess (b), Jerry Allison (dr) and Doug Kirkham (perc) - and that one actually is in E major.
