[Verse 1]
E7#5 Am9
       Well, I have known you...
Dm7 Am9
...since you were a small boy,
Dm7 Am9 Dm7
And your mama used to say,
          Am9
'Well, my boy is gonna grow up,
   Dm7 Am9 Dm7
And be some kind of leader some day!'

[Verse 2]
            E7
Then you'd turn on the radio,
    Amaj7
And sing with the singer in the band,
Am9
Your mama would say to you,
       D9 E7
'This isn't exactly what we had planned!'

(You are...) A hero in the footlights,
        Am9 Dm7
(Legend----!) Playing tunes to fit your rhyme,
         D9 E7
But, a legend's only a lonely boy,
     Am9 Dm7
When he goes home alone!

And though I ...know you...

...still have the heart of that small boy,
Dm7 Am9 Dm7
Well, you lend it out far too much,
   Am9 Dm7
And no one woman loving you...
                                  Am9 Dm7
...can ever feel that she's been really touched!

[Verse 4]
            E7
Then you'd turn on the radio,
    Amaj7
And sing with the singer in the band,

This isn't exactly what you had planned!

Thanks for the feedback Tim,

Finding the YouTube clips was vital in me working this out, I would never have thought of the precise chord shapes Carly uses just by listening to the album track. Relatively easy chord shapes but sounding quite sophisticated.

There's a rearranged version she recorded in 2009 on the 'Never been gone' album, which, she said in an interview, for her reflected a more mature performance, but, to me, it seemed a bit bland. It's the old head on young shoulders attitude and insight of her original '70's tracks that's the appeal to me.
