C  G/B  | Am  Am/G  | Dm  G  | C  F/C C

C        G/B     Am                    F       G             C
I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three.
C       G/B     Am                  Dm7               Gsus  G
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me. He said,
C         G/B       Am                F          G      C
"Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
C         G/B          Am      F           G                  C  F/C  C
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your Grandma so."

C           G/B   Am           F       G       C
We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together.
C           G/B    Am                 Dm7          Gsus    G
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever.
C          G/B    Am                 F           G         C
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
C         G/B        Am           F       G       C  F/C  C
Of her, I found this letter, and this is what it said:

       F            G     C   F          G     C
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
     F                G          Am
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
Dm7             Dm7/C      Gsus  G
I don't know how long I'll be.
        F         G       C     F       G        Am
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
       F            G            E7        Am7
And between now and then, till I see you again,
        F       G       C   G/B  | Am  Am/G  | Dm  G  | C F/C C
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

C            G/B        Am              F       G        C
I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away,
C              G/B  Am                  Dm7                Gsus  G
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray.
C          G/B   Am              F      G       C
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years;
C         G/B        Am       F        G                   C  F/C  C
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears.

       F            G     C   F          G     C
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
     F                G          Am
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
Dm7             Dm7/C      Gsus  G
I don't know how long I'll be.
        F         G       C     F       G        Am
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
       F            G            E7        Am7
And between now and then, till I see you again,
        F       G       C    Am7
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
   F            G            E7        Am7
Between now and then, till I see you again,
        F       G (NO CHORDS)
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

Thank you for this. This was one of my mother's favorite songs, and because of this beautiful and accurate transition, I was able to play it for her at her funeral.

Great job, I noticed one mistake though, in the second verse on the last line there is "Of her," with C over it, that is not actually in the song and was the only part that seemed wrong. Great job otherwise!
