This is a fantastic track from Oberst's solo album "Ruminations." It's a very easy song
to play, so enjoy!
I will be posting other tracks from the record as well, so be on the lookout for them!
Cheers- Luca

(Use a key of D harmonica)

[Verse 1]

There's a dance hall there

Where the sick folks go
Like the olden days on the Barbary Coast
D D/G
There's a barefoot child playing in the rain
You can sell your wares even if they're hot
In the great bazaar or the parking lot
D D/G
Cause it takes a while to know who to blame
I might have a taste cause the first one's free
And the checkout girl's got a thing for me
D D/G
And they're both as sweet as the day is long

Em A
I don't wanna feel stuck, baby
Em A D
I just wanna get drunk before noon

[Verse 2]

I don't mind my head when there's room to dream
Feel like Paul Gauguin painting breadfruit trees
D D/G
In some far off place where I don't belong
Try to lose myself in the primitive
In Yosemite like John Muir did
D D/G
But his eyes were blue and mine are red and raw
'Cause the modern world is a sight to see
It's a stimulant, it's pornography
D D/G
It takes all my will not to turn it off

Em A
I don't want you to feel sad, baby
Em A D
I take everything back, I swear I do

           Em D A
Cause once all the friends I had
     D A Bm
Have used me up and left
I bet you hang around
I bet you'll hang around awhile

All of the D/G chords should actually be G/D. When you use chords with slashes the top letter is the chord and the bottom letter is the bass note. So the overall chord is G, but the bass note is D. Not the other way around. You can just play a G chord in this case and it sounds great. Also "you can sell your wares even if they're HOT". Not "hard". Good chord chart otherwise.

Thank you for the lyrical suggestion, that certainly makes more sense in the context of the song. However, G/D and D/G are two different chords. G/D is played by the first string on the third fret, which is audibly incorrect for this song. You are correct however, about "slashed" or "x over y" chords, in that the bass note appears at the bottom. However, the G actually is the bass note in the case of D/G. Also, I strive to create the most accurate tabs possible, and although G may sound fine, Oberst is clearly playing D/G in the recording.

Ok I double checked the chord and I think that we are both partially right. I now believe the chord to be a Gmaj7. So it has the G as the bass note, which we both heard, it has the F# as the highest note which suggests a D shape as you thought, and it contains a B note, which made me hear the "G" as the overall chord. Check it out and see if you think so too! Also thank you for the clear explanation of what you were hearing (the first string not on the 3rd fret). That helped my figure out where I went wrong, since I often listen to bass notes first.
