A Long December - Counting Crows
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: Sean Hummer

A Long December is one of my favorite songs ever and I find this playing of
the song sounds fuller and more like the album version.

I've included a few tab riffs which include certain melody and lead parts to
give a more satisfying sound which resembles the album version of the song.

Tuning- A full step down or D Tuning

This riff is played at various parts after certain C chords which I
noted with an asterisk *
e|----------|
B|----------|
G|------0~--|
D|--0h2-----|
A|3---------|
E|----------|

This riff is played at various parts after certain Am chords which I
noted with two asterisks **

[Verse 1]
C G D Am
A long December and there's reason to believe
      C G C *
Maybe this year will be better than the last
 Am C G D
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were
Am
leavin'
        G C
Now the days go by so fast
         G C Am **
And it's one more day up in the canyons
         G C Am
And it's one more night in Hollywood
       G C Am
If you think that I could be forgiven... I wish you would.

[Chorus]
G C Am C
   Na, na-na, na. Na, na-na, na-na, na-na, na, na.
G C Am
   Na, na-na, na. Yeah...

Or to play it with a little lead...

[Verse 3]
 C G D Am
Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
    C G C
And talked a little while about the year
Am C G D
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
           Am G C
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not
show her
                C G D Am
And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
      C G C
Maybe this year will be better than the last
Am C G D
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
   Am G C
To hold on to these moments as they pass
         G C Am
And it's one more day up in the canyons
         G C Am
And it's one more night in Hollywood
     G C Am
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean... I guess I should

[Chorus]
G C Am C
   Na, na-na, na. Na, na-na, na-na, na-na, na, na.
G C Am
   Na, na-na, na. Yeah...

With lead...

This matches the original song if you move it up 7 frets (to G) and then play capoed at III. But it sounds good either way. Thank you!

The chord placements need just a bit of tinkering.

It matches the original song if you're tuned down a full step as I noted (the first note of the song is an F but I tabbed a G chord-shape with a full step down tuning, making it an F chord).

Make sense?
