Back in the 60's and 70's we played this song extensively. However we used the E7 on the 5th fret (a C7 position on the 5th fret). Our picking pattern with this chord in place was: 5 4 2 3, 4 2 3, 4 2 3, 4 2 3, repeatedly with occasional
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
open 6th and 1st strings thrown into the mix.

I see my arrows didn't show for the pick pattern. Basically strike down on the 5th and 4th strings while up stroke the 2nd and 3rd strings.
