The Original Key is A-MAJOR (just use a capo to bring this version up).
I transcribed it like this to fit my voice & to make it easier to play.
I've also included a "Chordal^Walking^Bass^Section" within the INTRO
at the end of each line in the VERSE'S - Doing this makes this version
sound more complete for acoustic, and more like the original song.
I transcribed this song completely for the solo acoustic player.

THE WALK DOWN EXPLINATION:
 Written like [C]^A^G^[C] and [C]^A^G^[G]
  1.(Play the C-Chord - accenting the "C" note on the A-string)
2.(Play the open "A-string" while holding the rest of the"C-Chord")
  3.(Play the "G"-note on the low-E-string-3rd-fret)
  4 (Play the "C-Chord") or ("G-Chord" - 2nd time around)
I hope this explains my walk^down transcription.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Southern Cross is a small constellation with the shape of a
cross (called Crux). Explorers of the Southern hemisphere used
Crux to guide them when sailing. By looking at Crux, they could
figure out in which direction to sail without getting lost.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Again, the Original Key is in A-MAJOR.
Just use a capo to bring this version up.

[Verse-1]
Got out of [G]town on a [F]boat going southern islands[C]^A^G^[C]
Sailing a [G]reach [F]before a following sea[C]^A^G^[G]
She was [G]making for the [F]trades on the outside[C]^A^G^[C]
And the [G]downhill [F]run to Papeete (Papa Ay Tay)[C]^A^G^[G]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Verse-2]
Off the [G]wind on this [F]heading lie the Marquesas[C]^A^G^[C]
We got [G]eighty feet of the [C]waterline, [C]nicely [Am]making [G]way
In a [G]noisy bar in [F]Avalon I tried to call you[C]^A^G^[C]
But on a[G]midnight watch I[F]realized why[C]twice you[Am]ran[G]away[G][G]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Chorus]
[F]Think about how [C]many times [F]I have [G]fallen
[F]Spirits are [C]using me, [F]larger voices [G]calling
[F]What heaven brought [C]you and me [F]cannot be for[G]gotten [G~hold~G]
I have been [C]arou[F]nd the [G]world
[C]looking for that [F]woman [G]girl
Who [C]knows love [F]can endure[G]^(STOP)
And you know it will [G][G]// [F][F]// [C]^A^G^[C]
And you know it will [G][G]//[F][F]// [C]^A^G^[G]
-------------------------------------------------------------
[Verse-3]
When you [G]see the Southern [F]Cross for the first time[C]^A^G^[C]
You [G]understand now [F]why you came this way[C]^A^G^[G]
Cause the [G]truth you might be [F]running from is so small[C]^A^G^[C]
But it's as [G]big as the [F]promise, the [C]promise of a [Am]coming [G]day[G]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Verse-4]
So I'm [G]sailing for [F]tomorrow, my dreams are a dying[C]^A^G^[C]
And my [G]love is an [F]anchor tied to you, [C]tied with a [Am]silver [G]chain
[G]I have my [F]ship and all her flags are a flyin[C]^A^G^[C]
She is [G]all that I have [F]left and [C]music [Am]is her [G]name[G]..think about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Chorus]
[F]Think about how [C]many times [F]I have [G]fallen
[F]Spirits are [C]using me, [F]larger voices [G]calling
[F]What heaven brought [C]you and me [F]cannot be for[G]gotten [G~hold~G]
I have been [C]arou[F]nd the [G]world
[C]looking for that [F]woman [G]girl
Who [C]knows love [F]can endure[G]^(STOP)
And you know it will [G][G]// [F][F]// [C]^A^G^[C]
And you know it will [G][G]// [F][F]// [C]^A^G^[G]
-------------------------------------------------------------
[Solo Break]
[G][G]//[F][F]//[C]^A^G^[C] - [G][G]//[F][F]//[C]^A^G^[G] (2X)
-------------------------------------------------------------
[Verse-5]
So we [G]cheated and we [F]lied and we tested[C]^A^G^[C]
And we [G]never failed to [F]fail, it was the [C]easiest thing to [G]do
[G]You will [F]survive being bested[C]^A^G^[C]
But [G]somebody fine will [F]come along make me [C]forget about [Am]loving [G]you

No, not really -
My transcription really does work the best, which is why I transcribed it that way.
But remember, you can always use a capo if you want to change the key.
Hope this helps your question.
