The song is sung a cappella, so I did my best.
(First tab, hope you like it!)

CHORUS:
 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D A C
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down to the bottom of the river
 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D C A
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down, a long way down

VERSE 1:

A C E A
If you get sleep or if you get none
    E D C A
The cock's gonna call in the morning, baby
A C E A
Check the cupboard for your daddy's gun
E D C A
Red sun rises like an early warning
     D F A D
The Lord's gonna come for your first born son
    A G F D
His hair's on fire and his heart is burning
   A C E A
So go to the river where the water runs
E D C A
Wash him deep where the tides are turning

BRIDGE:

    E D
And if you fall
 F E
If you fall

CHORUS

 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D A C
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down to the bottom of the river
 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D C A
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down, a long way down

VERSE 2:

      A C E A
The wolves will chase you by the pale moonlight
 E D C A
Drunk and driven by a devil's hunger
 A C E A
Drive your son like a railroad spike
 E D C A
Into the water, let it pull him under
 D F A D
Don't you lift him, let him drown alive
     A G F D
The good Lord speaks like a rolling thunder
 A C E A
Let that fever make the water rise
     E
And let the river run dry

And I said

CHORUS x 2

 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D A C
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down to the bottom of the river
 E D
Hold my hand
                    E D C A
Ooh, baby, it's a long way down, a long way down

What is the strum for this?

Wing it? It works for a single strum per chord, or three strums in swing rhythm. Really depends on your style, I just put the chords out there because I wanted it to be open to creativity.

I started working on my own version and the intro sounds pretty good but I'm stuck on the verses. I'm attempting to make a version with less chords per measure so that it doesn't feel so cluttered and so I can strum it.

So far I got E, E D A C, E, E D C Em any pointers?
