Alone Again (Naturally) is a song by Irish singer–songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was
released in 1972. The single spent six weeks, non-consecutively, at #1 on the United States
Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1972. O'Sullivan
has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when
O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. His mother was
not dead at the time that his song was written.

Fmaj7 Dm/F
In a little while from now
Am Am7
If I'm not feeling any less sour
Cm Am7b5
I promise myself
Ebdim7 D7
To treat myself and visit a nearby tower
Gm Gm7
And climbing to the top
Gm7b5 Gm11
To throw myself off
In an effort to
Make it clear to who
Dm/F E7
Ever what it's like when you're shattered
Am Am7
Left standing in the lurch
Am7b5 D7
At a church with people saying
Gm Gm7
"My God, that's tough, she stood him up
Gm7b5 Gm11
No point in us remaining
Fmaj7 Dm/F
We may as well go home"
Am7 D7
As I did on my own
Gm9 Bbm/F Fmaj7
Alone again, naturally
Fmaj7 Dm/F
To think that only yesterday
Am Am7
I was cheerful bright and gay
Looking forward to
Who wouldn't do?
Ebdim7 D7
The role I was about to play
Gm Gm7
And as if to knock me down
Gm7b5 Gm11
Reality came around
F C#3/F
And without as much
As a mere touch
Threw me into little pieces
Am Am7
Leaving me to doubt
Am7b5 D7
Talk about God in his mercy
Gm Gm7
Who if he really does exist
Gm7b5 Gm11
Why did he desert me?
Fmaj7 Dm/F
In my hour of need
Am7 D7
I truly am indeed
Gm9 Bbm/F Fmaj7
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world
Gm7b5 C/G
Than can be mended
Left unattended
What do we do?
Gm7 C/G
What do we do?

My mother, God rest her soul

Couldn’t understand why the only man

Leaving her to start

With a heart so badly broken

Despite encouragement from me

No words were ever spoken

I cried and cried all day

Alone again, naturally
Gm9 Bbm/F Fmaj7
Alone again, naturally
