Existing Chords were basically a rehash of the original by Charlie Rich.
Here is my take on what it should be like for the Gladys Knight version.

YOU'RE THE BEST THING
GLADYS KNIGHT
( 1973 Key of G )

INTRO:
G Bm Em C Cm Gmaj7

VERSE:
  Gmaj7
I'VE HAD MY SHARE
                  Am7
OF LIFE'S UPS AND DOWNS
 C D7
BUT FATE'S BEEN KIND
D7 Gmaj7 G7
THE DOWNS HAVE BEEN A FEW
    C
I GUESS YOU COULD SAY,
D7 Gmaj7 G7
 THAT I'VE BEEN LUCKY
   Em Em7 Em6 D9
I GUESS YOU COULD SAY,
               D D7
THAT IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU

CHORUS:
       Gmaj7 G7 C
IF ANYONE SHOULD EVER WRITE MY LIFE STORY
  Am7
(FOR WHATEVER REASON)
                                 D7 Gmaj7
FOR WHATEVER REASON THERE MIGHT BE
G7 C
  OOOOOH, YOU'D BE THERE
D7 Gmaj7
BETWEEN EACH LINE OF PAIN AND GLORY
C Am7
'CAUSE YOU'RE THE BEST THING
D7 Gmaj7 C
 THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME
      Am7
AHH, YOU'RE THE BEST THING
                D7 Gmaj7 C Gmaj7 A7
 THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME.

BREAK:
   Amaj7
OHHHHH, THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES
       Bm7
WHEN TIMES WERE HARD
       E E7 Amaj7 A7
BUT ALWAYS SOMEHOW I MADE IT, I MADE IT THROUGH
        D E7 Amaj7
’CAUSE FOR EVERY MOMENT THAT I'VE SPENT HURTING
                            F#m F#m7 F#m6 E9 E7
THERE WAS A MOMENT THAT I SPENT AHHH JUST LOVING YOU

CHORUS 2:
       Amaj7 A7
IF ANYONE SHOULD EVER WRITE MY LIFE STORY
 Bm7
(FOR WHATEVER REASON)
              E7 Amaj7
FOR WHATEVER REASON THERE MIGHT BE
A7 D
  OOOOOH, YOU'D BE THERE
              E Amaj7 F#m
BETWEEN EACH LINE OF PAIN AND GLORY
  Bm7
'CAUSE YOU'RE THE BEST THING
         E7 Amaj7 F#m
THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME
          Bm7
YOU'RE THE BEST THING
    E Amaj7 F#m
    THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME
E7 Bm7 E7

The version I am familiar with is in A. Using the lovely transpose function provided,Im replacing my old missing chart. Good job on the chords,jdsk40 it is very close as it turns out.
try this:
|A Amaj7/G#|C#dim/G |D Dm |Amaj7 |

|Amaj7 |% |Bm7 |% |D |E7 |Amaj7|A7 |
|D |E7 |Amaj7|A7 |
|F#m F#m(maj7)/F |F#m7/E F#min6/D# | [this section is an F#m triad,2nd fret with chromatic descending bass on the D str-]
|E |E7 |
this gets you to the chorus.
