Actually, I believe unless they're playing it acoustically, Greenday plays this song without a capo.

A capo is a kind of clip which, er, you clip onto your guitar neck across all the strings. It changes the key in which
you`re playing. It means you can play standard chord shapes in different keys, rather than playing barre chords or
changing the tuning. Of course you get subtly different tonality when playing barre chords and standard shaped chords
with a capo, which is why both are used here.
