E C#m A A

          E
It was a ruby that she wore
       C#m
On a chain around her neck
         A
In the shape of a heart
         A
In the shape of a heart
          E
It was a time I wont forget
         C#m
For the sorrow and regret
          A
And the shape of a heart
          A
And the shape of a heart

E C#m

A B A
 I guess I never knew
              B
What she was talking about
A B A
 I guess I never knew
              B
What she was living without

E C#m
People speak of love dont know what theyre thinking of
                                                  A
Wait around for the one who fits just like a glove
                                      A
Speak in terms of belief and belonging
                                     E C#m A A
Try to fit some name to their longing

There was a hole left in the wall
From some ancient fight
About the size of a fist
Or something thrown that had missed
And there were other holes as well
In the house where our nights fell
Far too many to repair
In the time that we were there

E C#m
People speak of love dont know what theyre thinking of
                                                  A
Wait around for the one who fits just like a glove
                                      A
Speak in terms of belief and belonging
                                     E C#m A A
Try to fit some name to their longing

E C#m

A
 You keep it up
B
 You try so hard
A B
To keep a life from coming apart
A
 And never know
B A
What breaches and faults are concealed
         B (A B)x4 E C#m A A
In the shape of a heart

It was the ruby that she wore
On a stand beside the bed
In the hour before dawn
When I knew she was gone
And I held it in my hand
For a little while
And dropped it into the wall
Let it go, heard it fall

A B A
 I guess I never knew
              B
What she was talking about
A B A
 I guess I never knew
              B
What she was living without

People speak of love dont know what theyre thinking of
Wait around for the one who fits just like a glove
Speak in terms of a life and the living
Try to find the word for forgiving

A
 You keep it up
B
 You try so hard
A B
To keep a life from coming apart
A
 And never know
B A
What breaches and faults are concealed
         B (A B)x4 E C#m A A
In the shape of a heart

Basically correct, however, in the verses, instead of just A it's 2 bars of A and 2 bars of B, as below:

|E|/|/|/|
|C#m|/|/|/|
|A|/|B|/|
|A|/|B|/|

Shamanic Rhythm was correct - It does use the [A|/|B|/] quite a bit throughout. That's the heartbeat used also by the bass line.

I have only listened to Jackson Browne's acoustic guitar solo version of this song.
First, he tuned the entire guitar down a FULL tone to D G C F A D

The 'B' chord seen above in this rendition is actually an 'A' shaped open chord moved up two frets so that it's actually an 'Asus2' variation.
