I'm confused: why are there chord diagrams at the top of the TAB, but then different fingerings below the diagrams? Does Ultimate Guitar generate these chord diagrams automagically? Are they easy to remove?

I don't blame you being confused. It's something that the website has introduced very recently, it's automatically added onto the top of every page, and it's really, really annoyed me. The software they use is fine for creating chord boxes from simple basic chords for the buskers out there, but is often useless for a lot of the tabs I contribute, that's why I always include a chord legend to show how I would play the chords. Up until recently you had to hover over the highlighted chords in the tab to get a pop-up chord box, or when printed out you could select to show or hide the chord boxes, it seems now you don't get the choice.
I hate this latest imposition and I suspect you are one of many who will be confused or irritated by them. I spend a lot of time and care to make my tabs presentable and playable, and UG's automatic chord box suggestions are definitely not my choice. I suggest you ignore their chord boxes.
