I should mention - above is just how I play it.

In the live KEXP BBQ show, Brian starts off with this riff instead, which he builds into the main chords by playing more and more of the open strings:

|-------------------------|
|-------------------------|
|-------------------------| x16
|-------------------------|
|-0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0--|
|-12-12-12-12-12-12-12-12-|

(Note: the note being playing on the bottom string is still a D, just a D played one octave higher than if it were played open. He plays it this way probably so that he can feasibly play it live.)

Then, for the rest of the song, he plays the main chords as:

|-12-----10----14----5-----|
|-0------0-----0-----0-----|
|-0------0-----0-----0-----|
|-0-x16--0-x8--0-x8--0-x32-|
|-0------0-----0-----0-----|
|-12-----10----14----5-----|

This sounds pretty bad on my own equipment, so I just stick with the barre chords instead, and I just play the top two strings of those chords if I feel I need those higher notes to be added in.

Sometimes during the KEXP BBQ live show, Brian quickly jumps up from
|-14-| |-17-|
|-0--| |-0--|
|-0--| |-0--|
|-0--| to |-0--|
|-0--| |-0--|
|-14-| |-17-|

So for that short second chord, I instead play:

|----|
|----|
|-14-|
|-14-|
|-12-|
|-12-|
