[Verse 1]
               D G D
She said "it's none of my business but it breaks my heart"
          D/B G D
Dropped a dozen cheap roses in my shopping cart
        D G D
Made it out to the truck without breaking down
D/B G D
Everybody knows you're in a speed trap town
       D G D
It's a Thursday night but there's a high school game
       D/B G D
Sneak a bottle up the bleachers and forget my name
      D G D
These 5-A bastards run a shallow cross
      D/B G D
It's a boy's last dream and a man's first loss

[Chorus 1]
       Em G D D/A
And it never did occur to me to leave, 'til tonight
       Em G D
There's no one left to ask if I'm all right
Em G D D/A
Sleep until I'm straight enough to drive, then decide
           Em G D
If there's anything that can't be left behind

[Verse 2]
    D G D
The doctor said daddy wouldn't make it a year
       D/B G D
But the holidays are over and he's still here
    D G D
How long can they keep you in the ICU
D/B G D
Veins through the skin like a faded tattoo
      D G D
Was a tough state trooper from a decade back
          D/B G D
Till that girl who wasn't mama caused his heart attack
          D G D
He didn't care about us when he was walkin' around
     D/B G D
Just pulling women over in a speed trap town

[Chorus 2]
       Em G D D/A
But it never did occur to me to leave, 'til tonight
       Em G D
When I realized he'll never be all right
Em G D D/A
Sign my name and say my last goodbye, then decide
             Em G D
That there's nothing here that can't be left behind

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 3]
D G D
Roads got blurry when the sun came up
D/B G D
Slept a couple hours in the pickup truck
D G D
Drank a cup of coffee by an Indian mound
D/B G D
Thousand miles away from that speed trap town
D/B G D
Thousand miles away from that speed trap town

It sounds a little bit more accurate to me in standard tuning with a normal G chord.

This is definitely the right tuning, at least based on how I've seen him play it. You can just play the 5th fret on the A string to make it a "fuller" G chord, and/or play the 3rd fret on the high e string, and leave the B string open to get the B.

According to the album insert, its "5-A bastards" like the high school division, not "5'8" bastards.
Thanks.
