Up the Pool

written by Ian Anderson
performed by Jethro Tull
from "Living in the past", 1971
transcribed by Peter Eybert

[Capo 7]

Dm7 D C G D

    D A4 A
I'm going up the 'Pool, from down the smoke below
   D A4 A
to taste me mum's jam Sarnis and see our Aunty Flo,
    Bm A4 A G Bm A4 A G
The candy floss salesman watches ladies in the sand
     C G Bb C
down for freaky weekends in the hope that they'll be meeting
          D C G Dm7 D
Mr. Universe.

    D A4 A
The iron tower smiles down upon the silver sea
     D A4 A
and along the golden mile they'll be swigging mugs of tea.
    Bm A4 A G Bm A4 A G
The politicians there who've come to take the air
      C G Bb C
while posing for the daily press will look around and blame the mess
   D C G Dm7 D
on Edward Pier.

            D C G D
There'll be buckets, spades and bingo, cockles, muscels, rainy days
Bb C D G6
seaweed and sand-castles, icy waves.
D C G D
Deck-chairs, rubber dinghies, old vests, braces dangling down,
  Bb C D
a sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze.

We're going up the 'Pool from down the Smoke below

to taste me mum's jam Sarnis and see our Aunty Flo,

down for freaky weekends in the hope that they'll be meeting

Mr. Universe.

    D C G D C G D Am
Oh, Blackpool, oh, Blackpool.

Relative to the capo, the Dm7 shape is (xx0565)

On the D chords, hammer on the notes on the 1st and 3rd strings from open strings, which is a Dsus2/4 chord (xx0030) to the D chord (xx0232), playing the syncopated rhythmn riff.

In the verses Ian Anderson plays a couple of hammered on bass notes, after the D chords play the open 5th and hammer on at the 2nd fret, and after the A chords play the open 6th string and then hammer on at the 3rd fret. Also after the G chord play an open 5th string and hammer-on at the 2nd fret.

I think the break chords should be..

D Dm7 C/D D
There'll be buckets, spades and bingo, cockles, muscels, rainy days,
Bb C D
Seaweed and sand - castles, icy waves,
D Dm7 C/D D
Deck-chairs, rubber dinghies, old vests, braces dangling down,
Bb C D
A sun-tanned stranded starfish in a daze

Dm7 = xx0211
C/D = xx0010

This verse should be repeated after the 'Mr.Universe', before going into the coda...
D C G D
