CRY SOFTLY
Josh Ritter

This is an as-yet unreleased song Josh played in St. Louis at the Pageant.
One or two of the lyrics are just guesses at this point. Believe he even mentioned
it is a work in progress. Took this from a recording at Infinity Hall in Norwalk, CT
from June 2014.

CAPO 4

[CHORDS]
C/G (332010)
F (133211)
G (320003)

[Intro]

C/G F G C/G

[Verse]

C/G F
Sometimes happily ever ain’t always ever after
G C/G
You promised me forever then you ran off with a dancer
C/G
Now it’s good to see you back here
F
But I’m on to greener pastures
G C/G
And if you gotta cry, cry softly

[Chorus]

F C/G
Cry softly, real quietly
G C/G
Your tears are unsightly
F C/G
There’s the front door, Bang softly
G C/G
If you gotta cry, cry softly

[Verse]

C/G
This ain’t the first time that you left me
F
Remember Reno, Taos and Tempe
G C/G
Remember Carlsbad, El Paso and that second time in Tempe
C/G
Yeah you’ve pulled a lot of fast ones
F
But this last one is your last one
G C/G
And if you’ve gotta cry, cry softly

[Chorus]

F C/G
Cry softly, real quietly
G C/G
Your tears are unsightly
F C/G
There’s the front door, Bang softly
G C/G
If you gotta cry, cry softly

[Break]

F C/G G C/G F C/G G C/G

[Verse]
C/G
Well heaven needs a hell
F
Liberty a bell
G
Up 'til now I thought that feeling bad
C/G
Meant things were going well
C/G
Now things are going great
F
But honey babe its late
G C/G
So if you gotta cry, cry softly

[Verse]

C/G
I admit since you’ve been gone
F
I’ve done my share of moving on
G
There’s been a lot of warm embracing
C/G
Whiskey chasing vodka blondes
C/G
Oh honey babe I'm beat
F
And I need a little sleep
G C/G
And if you gotta cry, cry softly

[Chorus]

F C/G
Cry softly, real quietly
G C/G
Your tears are unsightly
F C/G
There’s the front door, Bang softly
G
And if you gotta cry, cry
G
If you gotta cry, cry
G C/G
If you gotta cry, cry softly

[Outro]

F C/G G C/G

Thanks for this: always nice to hear of a 'new' song from Josh. Any chance you have a link for the recording you used? All I can find is one video of it in New Orleans on Youtube.

On this newer version he changed a few words and added a verse after the break. Also, not saying yours is wrong but in the New Orleans video he isn't playing on F in the verses (only the chorus) but I can't quite tell what it is.

Well Heaven needs a Hell
Liberty a bell
Up 'til now I thought that feeling bad
Meant things were going well
Now things are going great
But honey babe its late (Can't understand this line)
So if you gotta cry, cry softly

Thanks for the comment. The link I used is just an audio track from 2014. https://archive.org/details/joshritter2014-06-20

Great new verse. I only heard it the one time he played in St. Louis in May and dug around to find any version of it. Was hard for me to remember most of the lyrics and couldn't make out some on the track over the audience.

If you can figure out what that verse note is if not the F, please post.

(Just looked at the youtube video from New Orleans. Really liked it. He actually did a solo version of it in St. Louis four days after that.)
