Josh Ritter - The Temptation of Adam
Capo 4

F C E7 Am
If this was the Cold War, we could keep each other warm
       C G F C
I said on the first occasion that I met Marie
        F C E7 Am
We were crawling through the hatch That was the missile silo door
      C G F C
And I don’t think that she really thought that much of me
        Am C Am C
I never had to learn to love her, Like I learned to love the bomb
         Am C G C/E F
She just came along and started to ignore me
          Am C Am C
But as we waited for the big one, I started singing her my songs
      Am C G C/E F
And I think she started feeling something for me

   F C E7 Am
We passed the time with crosswords That she thought to bring inside
          C G F C
What five letters spelled apocalypse, she asked me
  F C E7 Am
I won her over saying “W-W-I-I-I”
      C G F C
Oh she smiled and we both knew that she misjudged me
   Am C Am C
Oh Marie it was so easy to fall in love with you
     Am C G C/E F
Fell almost like a home of swords or something
    Am C Am C
And you would keep the warhead missile silo good as new
        Am C G C/E F
And I'd watch you with my thumb above the button

F C E7 Am
Then one night you found me in my army issue cot
        C G F C
And you told me of your flash of inspiration
         F C E7 Am
You said fusion was the broken heart that’s lovely’s only thought
              C G F C
And all night long you drove me wild with your equations
   Am C Am C
Oh Marie do you remember all the time we used to take
     Am C G C/E F
We’d make our love and then ransack the rations
  Am C Am C
I think about you leaving now in the avalanche cascades
   Am C G C/E F
My eyes get washed away in chain reactions

   F C E7 Am
Oh Marie if you would stay then we could stick pins in the map
   C G F C
Of all the places where you thought that love would be found
But I would only need one pin to show where my loves at
     C G F C
In a top secret location 300 feet under the ground
            Am C Am C
Oh we could hold each other close, We'd stay up every night
        Am C G C/E F
Looking up into the dark like it’s the night sky
   Am C Am C
Pretend this giant missile is an old oak tree instead
        Am C G C/E F
And I’d carve your name & hearts into the warhead

   F C E7 Am
Oh Marie there's something tells me things just won't work out above
         C G F C
That our love would live a half-life on the surface
      F C E7 Am
So at night while you are sleeping I hold you closer just because
       C G F C
As our time grows short I get a little nervous
     Am C Am C
So I think about the big one W-W-I-I-I
         Am C G C/E F
Would we ever really care the world had ended?
          Am C Am C
You could hold me here forever, Like you’re holding me tonight
        Am C G
I think about that big red button and I’m tempted

Pretty good tab,
but there are a few misheard words and the last two verses have a few lines where the chords are wrong, I think.

The Temptation of Adam

Capo 4th fret

(F) (C) (E7/G#) (Am) (F) (C) (C5) (G)
(F) (C) (E7/G#) (Am) (F) (C) (C5) (G)
(F)“If this was the (C)Cold War, we could (E7)keep each other (Am)warm,”
I said (C)on the first oc(G)casion that I (F)met Marie. (C)
We were (F)crawling through the (C)hatch that was the (E7)missile silo (Am)door
And I (C)don’t think that she (G)really thought that (F)much of me. (C)
I never (Am)had to learn to (C)love her, like I (Am)learned to love the (C)bomb,
She just (Am)came along and (C)started to ig(G)nore (C/E)me,(F)
But as we (Am)waited for the (C)big one, I started (Am)singing her my (C)songs,
And I (Am)think she started (C)feeling something (G)for (C/E)me.(F)

We passed the time with (C)crosswords that she (E7)thought to bring in(Am)side.
What five (C)letters spell a(G)pocalypse, she (F)asked (C)me.
I (F)won her over (C)saying, “W-(E7)W-I-I-(Am)I”
Oh, we (C)smiled and we both (G)knew that she’d mis(F)judged me.(C)
Oh, Ma(Am)rie, it was so (C)easy to (Am)fall in love with (C)you,
It felt (Am)almost like a (C)home of sorts or (G)some(C/E)thing,(F)
And (Am)you would keep the (C)warhead missile (Am)silo good as (C)new,
And I'd (Am)watch you with my (C)thumb above the (G)button.(C/E)(F)

And then one night you (C)found me in my (E7)army issue (Am)cot,
And you (C)told me of your (G)flash of inspi(F)ration. (C)
You said (F)fusion was the (C)broken heart that’s (E7)lonely’s only (Am)thought,
And all night (C)long you drove me (G)wild with your e(F)qua(C)tions.
Oh, Ma(Am)rie, do you re(C)member all the (Am)time we used to (C)take?
(Am)Making love and (C)then ransack the (G)ra(C/E)tions.(F)
When I (Am)think about you (C)leaving now, the (Am)avalanche cas(C)cades,
And my (Am)eyes get washed a(C)way in chain re(G)ac(C/E)tions.
(F) (C) (E7/G#) (Am) (F) (C) (C5) (G)
(F) (C) (E7/G#) (Am) (F) (C) (C5) (G)

Oh, Ma(F)rie, if you would (C)stay, then we could (E7)stick pins in the (Am)map
Of (F)all the places (C)where you thought that (G)love would be (F)found,
But I would only (C)need one pin to (E7)show where my love’s (Am)at,
In a (C)top-secret lo(G)cation three hundred (F)feet under the (C)ground.
Oh, we could (Am)hold each other (C)close, we'd (Am)stay up every (C)night,
Looking (Am)up into the (C)dark like it’s the (G)night (C/E)sky,(F)
Pre(Am)tend this giant (C)missile is an (Am)old oak tree in(C)stead,
(Am)Carve our names and (C)hearts into the (G)war(C/E)head.(F)

Oh, Marie, there's something (C)tells me things just (E7)won't work out a(Am)bove,
That our (F)love would live a (C)half-life on the (G)surface.(C/E)(F)
So at night while you are (C)sleeping I hold you (E7)closer just be(Am)cause
As our (C)time grows short I (G)get a little (F)ner(C)vous.
So I (Am)think about the (C)big one, W-(Am)W-I-I-(C)I,
Would we (Am)ever really (C)care the world had (G)ended?(C/E)(F)
You could (Am)hold me here for(C)ever, like you’re (G)holding me to(F)night.
I think a(Am)bout that big red (C)button and I’m (G)tempted.
