Thanks for figuring this out for us all! This sound great.

In the chorus, the intro riff clearly repeats and absolutely uses a D. However, you can hear in the overall tonality a change to the second chord is voiced chromatically higher than the Em. I think there is another instrument (or bass) also playing G there and both that and the D in the riff sound together.

(Similarly, sometimes in the verse the first D in each progression has a G in bass.)
