When I Go Away
(capo 1st fret)
Performed by Levon Helm on Electric Dirt
Written by Larry Campbell
Am
Early in the morning, when the church bells toll
G E7
The choir's gonna sing, and the hearse will roll
Am
On down to the graveyard, where it's cold and gray
C G D Am
And then the sun's gonna shine through the shadows when I go away
Am
Don't want no sorrow, for this old orphan boy
G E7
I don't want no crying, only tears of joy
Am
I'm gonna see my mother, gonna see my father
C G D Am
And I'll be bound for glory in the morning when I go away
G Am
I'll be lifted up to the clouds on the wings of angels
G G E7
There's only flesh and bones in the ground where my troubles will stay
Am
See that storm over yonder, it's gonna rain all day
C G D Am
But then the sun's gonna shine through the shadows when I go away
Bridge:
Am
(I'm going home - Lift me up) When I go away
(I'm going home - Lift me up) No more crying
(I'm going home - Lift me up) No more trials
(I'm going home - Lift me up) Home to leave my worries in the ground
Home to leave my worries in the graveyard
Home to leave my troubles in the graveyard
Home to leave my trials
C G D Am
And I'll be bound for glory in the morning when I go away
Am
All my kin who love me, all my friends who care
G E7
Look beyond the dark clouds we're gonna meet up there
Am
When they lay me in the cold ground, bow your heads and pray
C G D Am
And I'll be bound for glory in the morning when I go away
C G D Am
And then the sun's gonna shine through the shadows when I go away
Bridge:
C G D Am
And I'll be bound for glory in the morning when I go away

One of the coolest things about this song to me is the 7th (G) in the verse where he has the E. Change that and it is more correct.

Thank you so much for chording this song! My father in law, who was my best friend and the closest person to Jesus that I ever met, just passed away.
I want to play this song for him at his funeral reception. Thank you so much!
