Loreena McKennit "ALL SOULS NIGHT"

Dm G
Bonfires dot the rolling hills
F13 C G
Figures dance around and around
Dm G
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
F13 C G
Moving to the pagan sound.

Somewhere in a hidden memory
Images float before my eyes
Of fragrant nights of straw and of bonfires
And dancing till the next sunrise.

CHORUS:
Dm C
I can see lights in the distance
Am G Dm G
Trembling in the dark cloak of night
Dm C
Candles and lanterns are dancing, dancing
Am G Dm G
A waltz on All Souls Night.

Figures of cornstalks bend in the shadows
Held up tall as the flames leap high
The green knight holds the holly bush
To mark where the old year passes by.

CHORUS

Bonfires dot the rolling hillsides
Figures dance around and around
To drums that pulse out echoes of darkness
And moving to the pagan sound.

Standing on the bridge that crosses
The river that goes out to the sea
The wind is full of a thousand voices
They pass by the bridge and me.

Doesn't sound quite right.

I agree - it doesn't sound right. I'm just an amateur but the following simple chords sound better to me:

Dm G
Dm Am Dm
Dm G
Dm Am Dm

Chorus
Dm Am
Am C Dm
Dm Am
Am C Dm

There is another version posted here in Am. It's fairly accurate. Years ago I picked up enough music theory to work out the chords from the melody line. What I worked out is
verse Dm C Bb C G/Dm 4 times
chorus Dm Am F C Dm C / Dm Am F C Dm G

I purchased the sheet music from her website (Quinlan Road) recently. All the chords in the verse are played as bar chords and are noted (no3) as in 'D(no3)'. Still,it sounds good enough playing the chords in basic first position, it goes
verse D C Bb A G 4 times
chorus Dm Am F C Dm Am / Dm Am F C G D

*I would change the 'A' in the verse phrase to a 'C' but that's just me. Don't be afraid to mix it up, find your own arrangement!! So long as it harmonizes with the melody, minor chord substitutions are okay.
