Em
             C G
It broke my heart to leave the city

Now I can't think of any
      D C D
it's true, it was a hard time that I come through

it's made me thankful for the blues

C - Em - C - G
D - C - D - G - G/F#

Em
          C G
Half my life spent on a highway

Half my life I didn't choose
    C Em C
And I have seen the North Star
                 G D
shining in the freight yard and I knew
                                C D
it was a hard time that it had come through
                               G G/F#
It's made him thankful for the blues

             C G
It broke my heart to know you waited
   (G/F#) Em D G G7
I had so many things to do
C Em
It's true as far as a lot of stuff
C G
you could have had a little bit of luck
         D C D
You just called and just hung it up
                    G G7
One of us has had enough
     C Em
It's true as far as a lot of stuff
C G
you could have had a little bit of luck
         D C D
You just called and just hung it up

love the tab. The lyrics in the last chorus are different from what I've ever heard...

This is pretty close. You can see him play the song up close in this video. There is some hammering. And it appears the last chord goes to F, not G, then back to C to finish off. Except, he is cappoed at 2.
