About this tab version
I listened to the song over and over with the lyrics in front of me to try to get everything just right. Was this info helpful? Yes No
There is no strumming pattern for this song yet. and get +5 IQ
The whole song is finger picked mostly, but these are the chords. There's more extravagant notes played
throughout the song, and I've added some of the easier ones to play with just one person playing.

I've seen this chord labeled as both Db and C#m, but I've written it as C#m for this:

Between the F#m and the A, there's a quick bass from Ab, like this:

And right before the first chord of the chorus, they hit one quick note before playing the C#m, like this:

E A E F#m A Bm E

[Verse 1]
E Ab A E
Some set their heads to swimming, nothing to lose
    F#m A Bm E
And drift About the good times with slippers in their boots
E Ab A E
Some walk the straight and narrow, only passing through.
F#m A Bm E
Trading this world over for a pair of gospel shoes

E Ab A E
F#m A Bm E

[Verse 2]
E Ab A E
Gospel shoes are laces shackled and chained
F#m A Bm E
Fitted for the poor, the runners of the race
E Ab A E
Now every hand is folded to the shape of a gun
F#m A Bm E
The targets ever changing but the war, it rages on

C#m E
So the armies march onward
E Bm
for the Mother and the Son
C#m E
As this world of screaming color
E Bm
its bleached in the blood.

E Ab A E
F#m A Bm E

[Verse 3]
E Ab A E
Freedom was a simple word, so reverent and true
F#m A Bm E
A long time ago it meant the right to choose
E Ab A E
Who you love and how to live, but now it's so misused
F#m A Bm E
And twisted by the politics of men in gospel shoes.

C#m E
So the armies march onward
E Bm
for the mother and the son
C#m E
As this world of screaming color
E Bm
is bleached in the blood.
A Bm
Our mother, she is crying
E Bm A
Her broken heart is blue
A Bm
'cus we're too busy dying
E Ab A
to love just like we lose
A Bm
gone weary of the light
A Bm
shes tired of all this fighting
A E
in the name of gospel shoes

E Ab A E
F#m A Bm E

It also sounds really good with a capo on the second fret and on -2

Just a few adjustments are needed. The Ab should be Abm (G#m) and the Bm should be B. I play it with a capo on the 4th fret in C to easily get the finger picking correct.
Thanks. Kim
