The intro chord is actually the top 4 notes of the G bar chord.

After he slides up to the 5th fret, he comes back to the G before quickly going down to the 2nd fret and back to the G. If you listen closely to the song, you will hear him hit the D note on the G chord in between sliding from the 5th to 2nd fret. He only stays at the G between 5 and 2 for a 1/4 measure. You can also hear all 4 notes from the G chord in the intro picking. You'll also notice that he hits the b string on the 3rd fret on the G bar chord on the second verse.
