I'd prefer version 2; it matches the original recording is in D and plays wonderful in this key. Some chords here do not sound right, though: VERSE - as has been pointed out in another comment, the F (or G in version 2) in lines 1 and 3 should be Dm (or Em in version 2) RIFF - The riff is | C C6 | Cmaj7 | (C x-3-2-0-1-0 / C6 x-3-2-2-1-0 / Cmaj7 x-3-2-0-0-0) or - in version 2) - | D D6 | Dmaj7 | (D x-x-0-2-3-2 / D6 x-x-0-4-3-2 / Dmaj7 x-x-0-2-2-2) CHORUS - should be | G7sus4 | % | G7 | % | G7sus4 | % | G7 | % | or (in version 2) | A7sus4 | % | A7 | % | A7sus4 | % | A7 | % |

Why not play it in the key of G without the capo? Is there some advantage playing it this way that I'm missing?

You could always play it properly with drop D tuning on the low E string
