[Verse 1]
D D/F# G/B G/F A
I have not been home since you left long ago...
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
Thumbing my way back to heaven...
D D/F# G/B G/F A
Counting steps... walking backwards on the road
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
Counting my way back to heaven...

[Chorus 1]
C* G* G C
I can't be free with what's locked inside of me
C/G Am G G
If there was a key, you took it in your hands
C* G* G C
There's no wrong or right... but I'm sure there's good and bad
C/G Am G G
The questions linger overhead

[Verse 2]
D D/F# G/B G/F A
No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
Thumbing my way back to heaven...
D D/F# G/B G/F A
Wish that I could hold you... wish that I had...
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
  Thinking 'bout heaven...

[Bridge]
C** C C
I let go of a rope... thinking that's what held me back...
Eb F
And in time I've realized... it's now wrapped around my neck
C** C C
I can't see what's next... from this lonely overpass
Eb F
Hang my head and count my steps, as another car goes past

[Chorus 2]
C* G* G C
All the rusted signs we ignore throughout our lives
C/G Am G G
Choosing the shiny ones instead
C* G* G C
I turned my back... now there's no turning back...
C/G Am G G
Mmmmmmmmmmm

[Verse 3]
D D/F# G/B G/F A
No matter how cold the winter, there's a springtime ahead
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
I smile, but who am I kidding?
D D/F# G/B G/F A
I'm just walkin' the miles... every once in a while, get a ride
D D/F# riff G/B G/F A
Thumbing my way back to heaven... x3

By the way, I'm not positive of the C & G "alternate" chords in the chorus and bridge, but they are fairly easy to play (compared to some other tabs out there) and sound just fine.

I think what you called "Eb" is actually an "Ab" isn't it?
