What are the starred chords all about? They don't sound right if played normally so i'm guessing the star means there is some alteration needed? Any ideas?

Actually, stupid question. * = barred chord played higher up the fret board i'm guessing.

Not a stupid question, those aren't "stars" they are diminished markings, indicated by a small circle, not unlike the "degrees" symbol you see on a thermometer. This means that the chords in question are diminished chords. Or chords that have the 5th lowered 1 half-step. Ultimate-Guitar doesn't currently have a way of reading this notation, and so the chords it shows you in the chord dictionary will be the standard C#, G#, F, etc. In order to fret these chords, you can usually simply find the finger holding the 5th of the chord and slide it down a fret from the normal position.
