Intro: D G D Bm G

D
Flatter than a tabletop
G
Makes you wonder why they stopped here
D Bm G
Wagon must have lost a wheel or they lacked ambition one
D
On the great migration west
G
Separated from the rest
D Bm
Though they might have tried their best
     G
They never caught the sun

        A
So they sunk some roots down in the dirt
   G
To keep from blowin' off the earth
A
Built a town around here
             G A
And when the dust had all but cleared
               D G A
They called it Levelland, the pride of man
   D G A
In Levelland

D
Granddad grew the dry land wheat
G
Stood on his own two feet
D Bm G
His mind got incomplete and they put him into the home
D
Daddy's cotton grows so high
G
Sucks the water table dry
D Bm
Rollin’ sprinklers circle by
G
Bleedin' them to the bone
      A
And I won't be here when it comes a day
   G
It all dries up and blows away
    A
I'd hang around just to see
         G A D
But they never had much use for me in Levelland
           G A D G A
They don't understand me out in Levelland

      G Bm A E
And I watch those jet trails carvin’ up that big blue sky
G Bm A
Coast to coasters watch 'em go
      G Bm
And I never would blame 'em one damn bit
        A D
If they never looked down on this
G Bm A
Not much here they'd wanna know
     D
Just Levelland
               G A
Far as you can point your hand
            D G A
Nothin' but Levelland

G Bm A D G Bm A G Bm A D G Bm A

D
Mama used to roll her hair
G
Back before the central air
D Bm G
We'd sit outside and watch the stars at night
D
She'd tell me to make a wish
G
I'd wish we both could fly
D Bm
Don't think she's seen the sky
G
Since we got the satellite dish and
D
I can hear the marching band
G
Doin' the best they can to play
D Bm G
"Smoke on the Water", "Joy to the World"
D
I've paid off all my debts
G
Got some change left over yet and I'm
D Bm
Gettin' on a whisper jet
          G A D
I'm gonna fly as far as I can get from Levelland
          G A
doin' the best I can
       D G A
Out in Levelland - imagine that

If anyone wantst to play this like the original (by James Mcmurtry), just take off the capo and transpose the chords down a step to C F Am and G :)

so is it C F AM G on a regular guitar and then transpose to G C Em D shapes on a B tuned Baritone or are you playing F B Dm C on the Baritone?

He's playing it C F AM G on the baritone. Watch the original video for the song, with his fingerings on the Danelectro. I used my whammy pedal to drop down an octave on guitar and it sounds perfect.

BTW, this really should be attributed to McMurtry. He even mentions in his live shows that "no, Robert Earl Keen did NOT write that song" lol
