Open D in the chorus? Against a C#5? It sounds to me more like he's playing a 5 string or drop tuned from Eb standard.

Yeah, you're right. After listening to it a little more closely, he the note is a C#. He does play a 5 string, but you can just tune the E string to Db.

Lack of accuracy. Bb on a five string is the only way to get that initial, and recurring, low tone. Also, there are many an open D missing during the verses.
