CAN THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN (Traditional)
Artists: Carter Familiy

Verse 1:
        G G7
I was standing by the window
      C G
On a dark and cloudy day
        G Bm Em
When I saw the hearse come rolling
        A7 D7 G
For to carry my mother away

CHORUS:
         G G7
Can the circle be unbroken
        C G
By and by, Lord, by and by
        G Bm Em
There's a better home awaiting
        A7 D7 G
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

Verse 2:
         G G7
Lord, I told the undertaker:
       C G
"Undertaker, please drive slow
          G Bm Em
For this body you are holding
        A7 D7 G
Lord, I hate to see her go."

CHORUS:
         G G7
Can the circle be unbroken
        C G
By and by, Lord, by and by
        G Bm Em
There's a better home awaiting
        A7 D7 G
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

Verse 3:
       G G7
For I followed close behind her
          C G
Tried to hold up and be brave
          G Bm Em
But I could not hide my sorrow
           A7 D7 G
When they laid her in the grave

CHORUS:
         G G7
Can the circle be unbroken
        C G
By and by, Lord, by and by
        G Bm Em
There's a better home awaiting
        A7 D7 G
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

Verse 4:
           G G7
Went back home Lord, my home was lonesome
        C G
Yes my mother she was gone
         G Bm Em
All my brothers, sisters cryin'
        A7 D7 G
What a home, so sad and lone.

CHORUS:
         G G7
Can the circle be unbroken
        C G
By and by, Lord, by and by
        G Bm Em
There's a better home awaiting
        A7 D7 G
In the sky, Lord, in the sky

The original Carter family recording in the 1930's had different chords from this tab. Version 2 gets the key right and the chords- but in the original the guitar was tuned down and Ma Carter played a C fingering.
