The song is originally played on the guitar and the banjo. Here's how I play the
song on the guitar.
It sounds better with two guitars, so find a friend who plays the guitar as well.

Standard Tunning, Capo 3 fret

Chords: G, Em, Am, C

Intro - the easiest way to play the intro is this:

        G Em Am C Am C G (keep playing G)
e|--------------------------------------------------------|
B|------0--0-----0-------0--------------0-----------------|
G|----0------2-0---2-0-2---2-0------0-2---2-0---0-----0-0-|
D|--0--------------------------2--2-----------2---2-------|
A|--------------------------------------------------------|
E|--------------------------------------------------------|

       G Em
If you miss the train I'm on,
         Am C
You will know that I am gone,
        Am C G
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.
          G Em
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
          Am C
A hundred miles, a hundred miles,
        Am C G
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles.

          G Em
Lord, I'm one, Lord, I'm two,
          Am C
Lord, I'm three, Lord, I'm four,
          Am C G
Lord, I'm five hundred miles a way from home.
          G Em
Away from home, away from home,
          Am C
Away from home, away from home,
          Am C G
Lord, I'm five hundred miles away from home.

      G Em
Not a shirt on my back,
      Am C
Not a penny to my name.
        Am C G
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way.
       G Em
This-A way, this-A way,
       Am C
This-A way, this-A way,
        Am C G
Lord, I can't go back home this-a way.

For the solo you can play the intro's part, or better yet,
improvise in the same key the way you feel it ;)

What's wrong with the chords? Just pick the notes from the chords and it will do just fine ;)
