how to read this tab
guitar tuner
set tempo
its my first time submitting a tab so the lay out is probably really awkward, dont blame me!
it isnt perfect down to the last detail so play around with the rhythm and timing
but thats all the fun with punk, you dont want it perfect. let that be a message to Bloc Party!
and dont try too hard, punk is casual guitar playing, do what you want! fiddle around
change it to suit you!
any questions? wow930@hotmail.co.uk

artist: the libertines
song: death on the stairs
tabbed by: LOZZER
tuning: EADGBe
key: b= bend up one semitone/fret
     h= hammer on
     ~=hold note

guitar 1
         Bbmaj Cmaj
¦-3-5-3----3----5----3--------3-3--5----3----| this is from the start until
¦-3-5-3----3----5----3--------33---5----3----| guitar 2 has played riff 1
¦-1-3-1--1-1----3----1--------1----3----1----| 7 times.

guitar 2
¦----------3-5---b5b5-3-| riff 1 x7

¦----------3-5---b5b5-3-b5~~~~~~~5--------| the 7th time you play riff 1 change
¦-----------------------------------------| the end like this.

now the lyrics kick in. i think guitar 1 just repeats the chords above, and i cant
out what guitar2 does but it returns back to riff 1 after about four to eight bars. its all
Bb major so you can have a go yourself.

when carl sings "oh baby please kill me..."
both guitars play the same riff but at different pitches.

¦------------- -------------------|
¦------------- -------------------|
¦------------- repeat a few times then... -------------------|
¦-0h1h3-3-1-0- -33333-1-0 riff 2-|
¦------------- -------------------|
¦------------- -------------------|

¦------------ -------------------|
¦-3h4h6-6-4-3 -66666-4-3---------|
¦------------ -------------------|
¦------------ repeat a few times then... ---------- riff 2-|
¦------------ -------------------|
¦------------ -------------------|

when he sings "oh baby please kill me..." for the second time, play the same riff but
and more frequent.
then they play around with the notes from riff 1, until eventually riff 1 is played
guitar 1 just plays around with Bbmaj chord in the background.

both guitars play the same.

for the outro play around with riff1 but in the higher pitch where the starting point is
string fret 15. at the very end bring the pitch back down to the 3rd fret. have fun!

yeah! and if u dont think they are u r a very odd person. im guessin ur idea of punk is greenday, blink 182 etc. well im sorry but u r WRONG! sure they are classified as punk but they aint worthy to be called punk. they r a hell of a lot closer to bein pop than punk!

yes libertines r punk! huge influence from the clash etc.
bloc party r kinda punk more than anythin else but they aint got wat it takes anyway so we mite aswell completly disregard them!

so if ur avin trouble defining true punk (not da shitty pop bands dat use nuffin else but power chords) some classic examples r the clash, the ramones, the libertines, sex pistols, the jam, buzzcocks etc.
and to end this... the yanks mite ave started punk, but the brits are a hell of a lot better at it! by FAR!

^ some of what you're saying i can't completely agree with:

1. British and American punk are hard to compare as they have a different background. Then again, there's American bands whose playing styles are similar to British bands'. Also, both scenes and styles have had a reciprocal influence on each other

2. Don't act like the Sex Pistols were more elaborate a band than Blink 182 is. They were a musically lousy bunch of whacked out kids who fired their bassist cause he didn't fit their image ("liked the Beatles and always washed himself") and hired the least talented musician ever to become famous (Sid Vicious). I mean, I enjoy listening to them too, once in a while, it's a sort of cheap fun to sing along to "Anarchy in the UK" or something, but in terms of musicianship they sucked. And it's not like THEY used less power chords than "the shitty pop bands".

3. As for the Libertines: They had a huge punk influence to their music and "Up the Bracket", after all, was produced by Mick Jones. But to me, they weren't exactly a "punk band"...they didn't fit certain patterns and they wrote songs much more elaborate than what almost any punk band would come up with. What makes the band so great is that their sound was a unique blend of punk and other sorts of music, and some songs were closer to punk ("Horrorshow", "Arbeit macht frei"), some had little to do with it ("Tell the King", "Music When the Lights Go Out")
