38 Years Old
The Tragically Hip

Standard Tuning
Listen for strumming & timing

Am	C G

Am C	G
Twelve men broke loose in '73
From Millhaven maximum security
Twelve pictures lined up across the front page
Seems the Mounties had a summertime war to wage

Am C	G
The chief told the people they had nothing to fear
The last thing they'd wanna do is hang around here
They mostly came from towns with long French names
But one of the dozen was a hometown shame

C/G	D	Am
Same pattern on the table, same clock on the wall
Been one seat empty 18 years in all
Freezing slow time away from the world
He’s 38 years old, never kissed a girl
He’s 38 years old, never kissed a girl

Am C	G
We were sittin' at the table, heard the telephone ring
Father said he'd tell me if he saw anything
Heard the tap on the window in the middle of the night
Held back the curtains for my older brother mike

Am D
See my sister got raped, so a man got killed
C/G D
Little boy went to prison, man's buried on the hill
Am D
Folks went back to normal when they closed the case
C/G D
They still stare at their shoes when they pass our place

Am C	G
My mother cried the horror has finally ceased
He whispered yeah, for the time being, at least
And over his shoulder, on the squad car megaphone
Said let's go Mikey, son, we're takin' you home

I tried it this way but I wanted to make it better, so I dropped the high E to a D, then used my pinky on the high E at the second then slide it up to third fret, (all for the Am chord) then the rest is played C walk down to G....try it
It is actually a G6 instead, not a full G triad. or simply the two bass strings (6,5) try not to strum the 1 and 2 strings. Play around you'll get it.

note: playing the Am then they bar the high E at the first is kind of the right idea the pitch is off on that string. I maybe color blind but not tone deaf....

There is an F before the C in the verse. Was playing it in a music here in Kingston when in walked Bobby Baker and he reminded me that I was missing the F between the Am and the C. listen for it, it's there.
