This song is made difficult by the half-step key change after the fourth verse. The switch from open
chords to bar chords is not very appealing, so it may sound better to keep the song in A major throughout.

VERSE 1:
A
I'm in a women's prison
     D A
With bars all around
  E
I caught my darlin' cheatin'
       D A
That's when I shot him down

I caught him in a honky-tonk
       D A
With a girl I used to know
    E
The door to my cell is open wide
      D A Asus4 A /G A Asus4 A
And a voice cries out, "Oh, no!"

VERSE 2:
    A
The judge says I'm guilty
   D A
My sentence is to die
  E
I know I've been forgiven
        D A
But the price of love is high

CHORUS:
          D
There's a crowd outside screamin',
                   A
"Let that murderer die"
     D
But above all their voices
                   E
I can hear my mama cry

VERSE 3:
    A
I'm sittin' here on death row
     D A
And, Lord, I've lost my mind
    E
For love I've killed my darlin'
        D A Asus4 A /G A Asus4 A
And for love I'll lose my life

VERSE 4:
      Bb
I can hear the warden coming
         Eb Bb
From the clinging of his keys
    F
But when they come to get me
                Eb Bb
They'll have to drag me off my knees

The door to my cell swings open
     Eb Bb
It's time for me to go
    F
The priest is readin' my last rights
          Eb Bb
He says, "Dyin's part of livin', you know"

CHORUS:
          Eb
There's a crowd outside screamin',
                   Bb
"Let that murderer fry"
     Eb
But above all their voices
                     F Bb
You can hear my mama cry

VERSE 5:
Bb
Now they've strapped me in the chair
    Eb
And covered up my eyes
        F
And the last voice I hear on Earth
             Bb
Is my mama's cry

"Amazing Grace how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found

Was blind, but now I see"

I have every White Stripes CD, and this song isn't on any of them...

This is a song they do live now and then. and to Gwynnell, if you're going to use a tab from BrokenBricks.com, then at least give credit to Patrick Ferris. He works hard on his tabs, doesn't just rip them from other people.
